The next goal is to hit 10,000 followers by Christmas!

Do you think it is possible? Can you help us?

On the 8th September 2023, we hit 6,000 followers which is incredible, we exceeded our target of 5,000 followers in 6 months and we constantly receive DMs from people who are looking to work in the insurance industry. It is great to see the community grow.

To celebrate 6,000 followers, Sam surprised me with another lunch with Emma at ‘Le Relais de Venise’ and it was right up my street and as an added bonus, I had seen it on TikTok. The restaurant was different as there is no menu; everyone is given the same starter and main, and I can see why. For the starter, we had a salad which I wasn’t too keen on as I’m not a salad lover, but the main was a different story. We had steak and chips and it was definitely one of the best steak and chips I have ever had. If you work in the city or want an excuse to try something new I would recommend you visit. They have a signature sauce which makes the whole meal; it is hard to describe the flavour but it was delicious. It was the best way to celebrate 6,000 followers and I will definitely be visiting again.

It is crazy to think when I first started this job, I didn’t really know what I was doing, I was quite shy and scared to show my creative potential, settling into my first corporate job. I didn’t really know much about social media in a business sense or much about insurance (which I found a big deal at the time as Empower Development is a training insurance company). But now, I can create a post in as little as 10 minutes and I have learnt so much about Instagram, the importance of hashtags, hitting the algorithm and putting out good quality content which our followers want to see and interact with. Don’t get me wrong, I am still at the beginning of my career and there is still so much more to learn and working with social media platforms, there will always be changes in trends and algorithms to be aware of. But it has been an amazing 6 months and I can only hope it continues to progress.

Podcasts

Also, over the last couple of months I have been editing our podcasts for Empower Talks. I have enjoyed learning something new and taking on a new challenge. As Sam often says ‘it is simple but not easy’, and pretty time-consuming. On average, it will take me a whole day to edit a podcast from start to finish as attention to detail is crucial. The next morning, I tend to listen to the episode with a fresh mind to spot any mistakes I might have missed and pick out any key quotes and clips for social media. I enjoy this task, and I believe it is good for me to know how to edit a podcast as I work in Marketing and podcasts are something many companies are doing.

Overall, I have fallen in love with my job more and more as time has gone on and I cannot wait to help Empower Development grow on social media!

A couple of weeks ago, I joined Sam on my first business trip. We travelled to Amsterdam for the Money 20/20 conference as she was giving a talk. I had never been to Amsterdam before, and I was surprised at how quick the flight was, taking no longer than 45 minutes.

While waiting for our hotel rooms to be ready, we decided to take advantage of the situation and ventured into Amsterdam Central to grab dinner. The city was breathtaking with its picturesque canals, and we stumbled upon a perfect dinner spotright by the water. It was a great opportunity to catch up with Sam on a personal level, away from work-related discussions. We ended up spending a couple of hours engrossed in conversation and savouring the delicious food.

The Conference

The next day, we met in the reception at around 8:30 and made our way to the conference. We spent the morning having a walk around, exploring the various exhibits and attractions. We came across a photo booth, a robot machine, hairdressers, and much more!

Later in the morning, Sam went to prepare for her talk, and I took the opportunity to find a good seat and create content for our social channels. Her talk went well—it was interactive, insightful, and interesting.

On the Way Home

Back at the airport, we encountered an unexpected hurdle—our flight was cancelled just 30 minutes before departure. Sam’s concern grew as she had a course scheduled early the next morning in Horsham. After exploring available options, we secured a flight for the following morning and booked another hotel.

To our surprise, the new hotel turned out to be a unique experience. YotelAir, as it was called, offered small cabin rooms that were both funny and unexpected. While compact, they had everything we needed, including a UK plug socket, which proved to be quite handy.

The following morning, we headed to our gate early, around 5:45 am, hoping for a smoother journey back. Thankfully, our luck turned around, and we made it home on time. Sam made it to her training in Horsham without any further complications.

A Memorable Trip

Now, she can finally share her excitement with the world!

In case you haven’t heard already, Sam is featured on the front cover of the latest edition of the Chartered Insurance Institute Journal, where she was interviewed about talent attraction, development, and qualifications, and her work at Empower Development.

At first, Sam thought the invitation was a mistake. But it turns out that it really is her on the front cover! In the interview, Sam discusses the power of social media and how it has helped her to attract talent to the insurance industry. She shares her insights on using TikTok as a tool for driving young professionals to consider a career in insurance. Sam has had over 3 million views on TikTok, 20,000 followers, and through the platform has influenced at least 20 people to pursue a career in insurance. In the article, Sam explains how TikTok can help impact the industry.

“I made one short video about graduates applying for jobs – that got half a million views and I gained 11,000 followers from that one video.“

Since founding Empower Development nearly five years ago, Sam has modernized the industry through her use of social media and impacted insurance professionals to achieve their training and certification goals. Empower Development offers a range of tools, resources, and guidance, allowing “Anyone who wants to study CII qualifications can, regardless of their circumstances or what kind of learner they are.”

In the interview, Sam discusses other projects she has launched to attract talent, including the courses we offer, which help people navigate the insurance industry and achieve their training and certification goals. She also talks about the awards she and the company have won and how she sees herself as an individual, saying, “I pride myself on understanding things and explaining them simply, then that openness and accessibility feeds into everything we do.”

The interview with Sam is insightful, providing valuable information on the power of social media and attracting talent to the insurance industry. To read the full interview, check out the link below:

Elisse continues her apprenticeship journey.

Attending my first networking event… solo!

It’s safe to say I am not the most confident person when it comes to speaking to new people and engaging with unacquainted faces. Attending an event on my own is something I never thought would be possible, but after receiving an invitation to an event from the Ladies that Lunch group I found it hard to refuse. The LTL is a collective of underrepresented women in insurance and they strive to professionally develop their members in their careers across the insurance industry and beyond. Founded and hosted by Teni Tijani, who I had met previously, I knew I would get a warm welcome – she is so lovely! How could I not want to be part of such a great event?

The event was something I have never done before, it was a baking event which involved teaming up with other people in the group and baking a cake (the cakes were a Christmas edition as the event was held in December). The best way to describe the event setting is, if you know the program, ‘The Great British Bake Off’. We were all competing in a tent and the group who baked the nicest looking and tasting cake won. I thought I would be good at this task as I really enjoy baking, but the cake didn’t turn out as good as me and my team wanted it to, although it tasted delicious! Our aim was to bake a reindeer and instead we ended up with a Christmassy mess plus lots of chocolate and sprinkles! Although, there were some amazing cakes baked by others!

Walking into this event, there were faces I recognised which was nice, and felt less daunting. Even though I have never met them in person or had a good conversation with them before, it was nice being able to say hello already knowing their names. There was a woman who is in one of our podcast episodes (Empower Talks) called Lara and she was lovely, followed by a couple of other women who had used our online courses and had nothing but nice things to say about Empower Development which made me super proud.

Overall, attending this event made me realise networking isn’t as ‘scary’ as I used to think, and it is actually nice to talk to new faces and build relationships with people working in the same industry and it is beneficial for all of us. Networking is so important to improve business growth, exchange new ideas, build impactful connections and grow confidence! I have only been in my full-time role for 6 months and my confidence has grown so much through talking to new people and being surrounded by different personalities.

My advice to anyone who is building up the courage to attend networking events on their own would be to just do it! After the first time it will only get easier and the more you attend, the more relationships you build and the more your career really progresses!

Elisse discusses ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ by Susan Jeffers

My first cover to cover series is over and what a great book to start with! The series was amazing for a number of reasons: a great opportunity to connect with our followers, allowed me to gain much more confidence and helped me discover a love for reading which is something I never thought I would say!

Growing up, reading was something I never enjoyed, and looking back now maybe that was because I never gave it enough chance, and I get the feeling a lot of my generation can relate to this. So much of our culture revolves around social media, video games and mobile phones people don’t take the time to read books anymore. However, after reading ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’, I’m not exaggerating when I say it has changed my outlook on life. I cannot wait to continue reading and teach myself ways to better myself.

As someone who has stepped into their first full time job, this book has encouraged me in many ways. Susan Jeffers explores what we fear, why we feel it and what to do differently. Everyone experiences fear in their life whether it is through losing your job, relationships, health or being laughed at by a group of people. Jeffers provides a map to help us feel our fears while implementing steps to move forward. She believes we can develop a resilience muscle to face our fears through developing a stronger mind set.

Susan Jeffers has many amazing quotes throughout her book but there is one that everyone can relate to:

“If everyone feels fear when approaching something totally new in life, yet so many are out there doing it despite the fear, then we must conclude that fear is not the problem.”

Jeffers believes fear is not a psychological problem but an educational one. Fear surfaces whenever we take a risk or try something new and many of us treat fear as an obstacle that stops us from achieving. However, in order to overcome your fear, you must understand it and Jeffers discusses this more in the book by breaking fear down into 3 levels followed by 5 truths about it.

A great thing about this book is everybody can read it; everybody can relate to it, and everyone can learn from it no matter what stage you are in with your life. I would recommend it to everybody because after reading this your entire outlook changes and you handle situations differently; it motivates you to be better and take those risks and learn about yourself as an individual.

Personally, after reading ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ I have learnt to manage my frame of mind and reinforce more positive thinking as I used to have quite a negative mentality and that would massively set me back, but I have realised, walking into something with a positive view, automatically takes away the feeling of fear and allows me to enjoy what I am doing. It has helped build the courage to take certain actions moving forward, that I don’t think I would have taken otherwise, and face my fears head on. ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ is one of those rare books which instantly speak to you on a subconscious level, just reading it makes you stronger.

Life is too short to live in fear, resentment and negative assumptions.

Going forward, I am excited to film more cover to cover episodes with my colleague Hannah, and read more self-help books as I find them really helpful.

You can follow Elisse & Hannah’s ‘Cover to Cover’ on our Instagram page

Understanding apprenticeships

Follow my apprenticeship journey

My name is Elisse Considine, I am 18 years old and have recently started my first ‘proper’ job at Empower Development.

I always knew that university was not for me, so I looked to the route of apprenticeships. For a few years now I have taken an interest in marketing, and I feel lucky to have begun my career as a marketing apprentice with Empower Development. I’m now three months in and it has been an exciting journey so far and I’m going to share my experiences in this blog as it continues.

A bit of background information on apprenticeships, they are hugely beneficial, both to the apprentice and to the employer. Apprentices benefit by learning valuable skills, whilst gaining practical experience and earning a wage. For the employer, hiring an apprentice is an effective way to grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

With my apprenticeship I learn and gain valuable experience, ‘earn as you learn’ is a great way to put it. With my apprenticeship about to commence, I will be spending 20% of my working hours learning and developing through completing classroom-based learning and development activities.

I was very anxious starting as I had never worked in an office environment before, and it’s safe to say I was out of my comfort zone, but everyone was very welcoming and willing to help which helped me settle quickly.

The apprenticeship has allowed me to develop my skills and knowledge in the marketing sector. I have been fortunate enough to have many trips to London to gain a better understanding of the insurance market. I have visited some of the most famous insurance buildings in London including Lloyd’s of London and the Walkie Talkie building, whilst enjoying some business lunches along the way.

Throughout my short time working for Empower Development, I have been given multiple opportunities to work independently and work on growing my confidence. For example, there is currently a series on our Instagram called ‘cover to cover’ which involves me going live once a week with a colleague discussing the books we have been reading. This is something I have really enjoyed as I have been able to engage with our followers and feel more comfortable speaking and being in front of the camera.

Working for a smaller size business has also allowed me to work with all members of the team. From learning what the MD does to the training providers. I even have a marketing mentor who helps and guides me.

I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who is looking for experience and to try something new. It is the perfect way to get the work experience you need to kick off your career. Since starting my apprenticeship, I have not looked back, it was definitely the right route for me, and it has allowed me to get my foot in the door at Empower Development.

How to know if an apprenticeship is for you?

Apprentices can be at different levels from school leavers and university graduates to people who want to further their career or change direction. There is a misconception that it is for school leavers, but this is not the case. Put simply, you can do an apprenticeship at any age!

In our last blog, we looked at how the pandemic has brought about seismic change to working practices and paved the way for the growth of a hybrid way of working.

We talked about how home working has worked for many, delivering more family time, increased flexibility in working hours and the demise of the daily commute. But we also considered how leaders are losing touch with their employees and raised the real issue for many of digital exhaustion.

In this blog, we look at further consideration for leaders if the hybrid model of working is to be successful. Statistics are again taken from the 2021 Work Trend Index*.

Consideration 4 – Gen Z employees need your care

Younger people have suffered disproportionately during the pandemic. A majority of Gen Zers – the 18 to 25-year-olds – are struggling or only just surviving. Often in their first jobs, they are missing out on the casual conversations, the small talk, the office jokes that help teams to feel connected. To start your career in an environment that is totally remote is very hard. This generation is also more likely to be single and so feeling the impact of isolation at home as well.

The contribution of new generations is vital for organisations to thrive, but they have been plunged into a situation that makes it hard for them to input their ideas. Making sure these young workers are helped to develop their sense of purpose and that their mental health issues are addressed is going to be important as we move forward.

Consideration 5 – Our networks have shrunk

Microsoft has analysed aggregated data on collaboration trends in 122 billion Outlook emails and 2.3 billion Team meetings. Their findings were clear in that the shift to remote working has caused our networks to shrink. We interacted with our closest colleagues more but with our wider networks far less.

It makes sense that in unusual times we gravitate towards those we know, but when you lose connections, it’s harder for new ideas to be introduced, with a knock-on effect to a slowing of innovation.

The good news is that it appears as lockdowns lift, we start to widen our networks again. As organisations strive to find that balance of face-to-face and remote teams, it will be worth remembering that the result of purely remote working can be siloed, insular teams. Leaders must strive to encourage cross-team collaboration, and with it, the idea sharing that drives new thinking.

Consideration 6 – the world is your oyster

One of the real positives to remote working is that organisations can search the globe for the brightest talent to fill their vacancies, and candidates are no longer bound by commuting distances. An analysis of jobs posted on LinkedIn showed a five-fold increase during the pandemic in remotely based positions. This is for the good of everyone, helping to create equal access to roles regardless of where you choose to live. Remote working also seems to be more attractive to diverse sectors of society. Switched on leaders will see that a change in working practices can be a strategy for attracting the best and most diverse talent.

One final point we would raise is that as everyone found their own ways to balance work responsibilities and homeschooling, shushing away the dog from their Zoom calls and sighing at the delivery arriving during the morning catch up, something happened. Work became more tolerant of us as humans. We discovered that there is no ‘work life’ and ‘home life’ – there is simply ‘life’. If a colleague joined a meeting with a cat on their lap, we loved it. A small child wandered in during a client meeting; it really wasn’t a problem. Interactions may have been taken online, but they also became more authentic. We all shared a level of vulnerability almost unthinkable pre-2020. This is one aspect of the pandemic that we hope is here to stay.

In conclusion, the mammoth changes of last year have caused employees to re-evaluate what is important. The way organisations tackle the changes needed to the way they work, taking the positives and addressing the challenges, will have an effect on which employees stay, which move on and the candidates you will attract in future.

As we look forward to the end of the most stringent restrictions that the pandemic brought, how will our work world be affected by the year of home working? And will new trends develop that will permanently change the modern work landscape? Over two blogs, we will dig a bit deeper into the lasting effect of Covid 19 and the issues that leaders need to address.

Why weren’t we more flexible?

The move to more flexible working has been topical for a few years. Some forward-thinking organisations had already embraced the approach, but for the vast majority of organisations, being based in an office was the norm.

Three key barriers to more widespread flexible working were common. Firstly, access to the technology to allow it to be effective. Secondly, a trust issue, with some managers uncomfortable about the lack of direct management control and finally, a concern about effectiveness. Even where organisations trusted their employees to do their jobs, there was a feeling that it just wouldn’t be as effective as working face to face with others.

A huge disruption

With an almost overnight shift to home working for vast swathes of the UK workforce in March of 2020, companies had to turn their traditional way of thinking on its head. This was disruption on a scale probably not encountered since the second World War.

And it’s not ended either. Now that employees have proved that location and productivity are not intrinsically linked, the buzz term we are hearing is ‘hybrid’, and this approach continues to disrupt engrained workplace culture, changing it, we believe, forever. Hybrid working is about blending the best of both worlds and giving employees more choice about where they work. It sounds great, but for it to work properly, there are some important considerations to address. The pandemic may have started this particular revolution, but hybrid working will define our future workplaces, and it’s down to our leaders to make it work. A survey by The Work Trend Index* reveals some interesting findings, and the statistics below are taken from it.

Consideration 1 – flexible working is not going away

Now that so many of us have experienced the benefits, according to the survey, 70% of workers want flexible arrangements to remain, and 65% want the option for face to face time with their teams. As a result, two-thirds of corporate decision-makers are looking at how they can redesign physical workspaces to accommodate hybrid working practices that will meet both objectives. The pandemic has caused employees to re-evaluate their expectations, and there is a demand for the flexibility to choose when, where, and how they work.

Consideration 2 – leaders need to be in touch with their employees

The survey shows that of the business leaders questioned, over 60% felt they were thriving at the moment. By contrast, that feeling within workers without any decision-making authority, more likely to be younger workers, women and frontline workers, is just 37%. There’s a clear disconnect. Part of this could be that leaders are missing the opportunity for ad hoc catch-ups with their teams to ask how they are and losing the ability to quickly pick up on issues. For hybrid working to be successful, leaders need to find new ways to tap into the wellbeing of their employees.

Consideration 3 – workers are exhausted

20% of the survey respondents feel their employer does not care about their work/life balance. Over half feel they are overworked, and nearly 40% feel exhausted.

One of the issues is that the pandemic has resulted in a massive increase in the digital intensity of people’s lives. Figures from Microsoft suggest that over the last year, time on Microsoft Teams has more than doubled, and average online meeting time has risen from 35 to 45 minutes. The average user of Teams sends 45% more chats every week, and there’s been an increase of 66% of people working on documents on Teams.

The problem is, we are bombarded with communications, and they are often unstructured or unplanned. Workers are feeling under pressure to keep on top of things, and on the whole, are doing so, as response times have changed little despite the increase in communications. Whilst we might have lost the daily commute, there’s a reported 42% increase in chats sent after standard office hours. Leaders need to acknowledge this issue and find ways to manage the digital overload that so many are experiencing.

Do any of these issues resonate with you? Do share your views with us – and look out for part two of this blog that highlights more considerations that need addressing for our brave new hybrid world to succeed.

Does your account have a picture and completed profile?

Do you like other people’s posts?

Do you comment on other people’s posts?

Do you write your own posts? Do you add photos to your posts?

Do you write articles?

Do you upload video content?

How far down the list did you get before the answer was no?

We find the majority switch to no at commenting on other people’s posts. Our goal for this blog is to encourage you to increase your yeses to those questions.

Comfort zones

This isn’t about taking you right out of your comfort zone; instead, it’s gradually stretching that comfort zone, in increments, over a period of time.

The thing to remember is that everyone on LinkedIn, no matter how great their number of connections, how inciteful their content, started with one post. Even the most prolific contributor probably had doubts when they started.

If you have shied away from engaging on LinkedIn, you can start gently by liking some posts you find interesting. Once you get comfortable with that, try adding a comment or asking a question. Next, you can think about generating some content yourself. If you don’t know what to post, consider topics on your self-development and awareness, congratulating or thanking others. Finding ways to celebrate success is an easy and comfortable place to start and will always be received positively.

We all know a picture is worth a thousand words. Include one wherever possible. It will catch people’s eye when scrolling and encourage them to stop and have a read of your post.

Once you’ve made a few posts, you’ll probably find your engagement increases, and that will make you feel great, and hopefully give you the confidence to go a bit further with your content. Engagement is key – so when someone comments on a post of yours, you can respond with a thank you or add to the conversation. Everyone involved starts to feel good about the process and a little more involved in the conversations going on around their network.

The final stage

In the final stage, if you’ve given a few likes and comments, written a couple of posts, added a picture and maybe had some connections engage, you can push yourself a bit further. Think about writing an article about something you know a lot about.

People want to benefit from your expertise, so don’t feel shy about sharing it. Or maybe do a little video—just a few seconds. At the same time, do not feel pressured to do this; you can be active and effective on LinkedIn without reaching this stage.

Our point is that wherever your current LinkedIn bar is, you can raise it a bit higher at a rate you are comfortable with. Your aim is not to become a social media influencer but to stand out amongst your professional network. Step by step, at a rate that feels right for you.

Why not give it a go? And if you are already on your LinkedIn journey, let us know how it’s going.
